The legend of the wine:
A pious old widow is said to have lived in a small village near Brig. She spun wool diligently every day until evening. When it got cold outside, she is said to have let the poor souls in at midnight. She left a small light burning and went to bed. When the poor souls came in, they warmed themselves by the stove and stayed with the old Schmidja until morning. One evening, however, Schmidja is said to have spun longer than usual. The poor souls called out from outside the window, “Schoch, the old Schmidja is still spinning.” But the old widow was determined to finish spinning the tow. Outside, however, it was Schoch (freezing cold), and the poor souls are said to have blown the door open with a gust of wind. On the evening she died, the poor souls are said to have been seen in a procession to the glacier. Today, when the poor souls pray for admission, you are supposed to shout “Schoch, the old Schmidja is still spinning” for protection. So that they leave us alone and do not suddenly haunt us on the day of our death.
