The legend of the wine: Two Valais winegrowers claimed that each of them had the best red wine in the Rhone Valley. They praised their own grape variety and their unsurpassed craftsmanship above all else and took every opportunity to disparage each other’s wine. Over the years, this developed into a bitter feud that divided the two families in the most terrible way.
Two young people suffered particularly from the dispute – the daughter of one had lost her heart to the son of the other winegrower, and the two lovers felt a deep desire to marry. But their fathers refused to give their blessing. The unhappy couple were soon at their wits’ end with despair and decided to complain about their suffering to the village priest and seek his divine advice. He promptly summoned the two quarrelling winegrowers and appealed to their conscience.
But the two old quarrellers remained irreconcilable and showed no understanding, so the two lovers secretly left their village to seek their fortune far away. They only returned when their fathers had died of grief and unyielding quarrelsomeness. As a sign of reconciliation between the two families, the young couple began to press the grapes of these two varieties together, creating a wine that combines the best of both.
